In order to transport critically ill patients to the nearest hospital with adequate facilities, VPS Lakeshore has introduced free emergency service ambulance. The ambulance will be stationed on the National Highway at Moham Hospital, Eramalloor. The service was flagged off  by Aroor MLA Shri.Arif A M. The facility can be availed by calling on 9961630000. Project Samaritan is a joint venture of VPS Lakeshore hospital, Rotary Club of Cochin West and the Kochi City police.. It is a 3 hour meticulously structured training programme where school and college kids are taught 20 different life saving skills which can be useful during various emergency situations including accidents and trauma. This programme has 3 levels of which we could complete 3O different  level 1 programmes in various schools and colleges in Kochi  over a period of 6 months and is still ongoing..We also have a level 2 programme where a full day certified course in accident and emergency care is offered to selected Students from various schools..
4 level 2 programmes have been completed.There is also a level 3 Samaritan where some really good students will be trained intensively to help the Police force in handling emergencies..Project Samaritan has been hugely successf

41 year old Mr. Riyas was admitted to VPS lakeshore hospital with severe breathing difficulty, cough and low oxygen levels in blood. The duration of illness was only 3days, prior to which he was in perfect health. At admission, his oxygen level in blood was <50%, was in extreme respiratory distress and xray of chest showed severe pneumonia involving more than 90% of his lungs. He was evaluated by the pulmonologist, diagnosed to have severe viral pneumonia which was later confirmed to be H1N1 alongwith ARDS which is a very serious complication of pneumonia. He also had hypotension and renal failure. Critical care and nephrology team were immediately involved, was ventilated immediately on arrival, resuscitative measures including dialysis were initiated. Morbid obesity (BMI of 40) and very poor lung compliance made ventilation an extremely difficult task.
